Bolton Overview
Bolton is one of many towns which is often overshadowed by nearby Manchester but with its’ own unique identity. The city has one the most impressive town halls anywhere in the North. This is some accomplishment as many of the northern cities have town halls which resemble large medieval churches. The shopping centre is pedestrianised and is a pleasant place to spend some of your leisure time. There is a large Asian superstore and various mill shops dotted throughout the city selling everything at bargain prices, all displaying Bolton's mix of manufacturing past and present and multi-ethnicity. Overall, the town has a good market atmosphere and a friendly disposition with plenty of things on offer.
Things to do in Bolton
The town has the Octagon, a high-quality theatre and a large Hall for pantomimes and other live entertainment, all in a Victorian setting. The ABC Cinema in town three screens and offers frequent viewing of blockbusters. Bolton has at least two night-clubs, one of which attracts big name DJs and hosts many events. Manchester is just a stone throws away and big enough if you need more.
Sport in Bolton
The town is represented in football by First Division Bolton Wanderers which play now at the new and impressive Reebok Stadium. If you are into water sports, Water Place located at Deane Campus offers pools, slides, a jacuzzi, and bubble beds.
Escape Bolton
Near to Bolton are the west Pennine moors and offers great opportunities for great walks. The area has many of the country’s reservoirs. If you like hill climbing and walking than this area might just be perfect. Also good connection to Manchester and Liverpool gives you endless opportunities for escaping student life in Bolton.
Transport in Bolton
Manchester is within easy reach by rail, only taking a couple of minutes to get into the city centre. The M61 and M62 are good road links out of Bolton. Nearby Manchester Airport offers regular flights to most parts of the world and there’s even a shuttle service to London. If you want to go somewhere further afield than you will need to get to Manchester first. At Manchester you will find two intercity rail terminals to get you somewhere fast (Manchester Piccadilly for London -just over two and a half hours - and the South; Manchester Victoria for Scotland, Wales, Leeds and Liverpool).
